Patchouli gained widespread fame in 18th century Europe, when, during the Eastern fashion craze, cashmere shawls impregnated with the scent of patchouli leaves were imported into France via the Silk Road. The leaves of the plant were used as a natural element to protect fabric from insects. Its unusual fragrance quickly became recognized as an aphrodisiac. Patchouli saw a revival in the 1960s — the era of hippies and free love. The scent has always been associated with sensuality, especially when combined with vibrant floral notes such as ylang-ylang, intoxicating jasmine, and the queen of flowers, rose.
